The History
Kentish Men & Maids are from the west of the river Medway, whilst Men & Maids of Kent are from the east of the river. There have been two Kent dioceses since AD605 - Canterbury (East Kent) and Rochester (West Kent).
The Men of Kent appear to have resisted William the Conqueror more stoutly than the Kentish Men, who weakly surrendered.
Thus, it is said, the Men of Kent became proud, whilst the Kentish Men were believed to be weak minded!
